Q: What is the CIA?
A: CIA stands for Certified Internal Auditor — the only globally recognised certification for internal auditors. It's awarded by The IIA (Institute of Internal Auditors).
Q: How recognised is the credential?
A: It's a global designation held by 200,000+ professionals across 170+ countries.
Q: What is the exam structure?
A: There are two routes. (1) Traditional route - a 3-part exam: Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3. (2) Challenge Exam route - a single exam for experienced professionals who already hold a qualifying credential or meet experience requirements.
Q: Do I have to take the parts in a set order?
A: No. The IIA doesn't prescribe an order - take Parts 1, 2, and 3 in whatever sequence suits you.
Q: Who is the Challenge Exam for?
A: Experienced professionals - for example, those holding a qualifying designation (such as CA, CPA, or CISA) or with sufficient relevant experience. In 2026 The IIA opened a pilot pathway for professionals with 10+ years of internal audit (or related) experience. The pilot application window runs 1 April–30 September 2026, and the updated Challenge Exam aligns to the 2024 Global Internal Audit Standards from 1 June 2026. It is a single 150-question exam.
Q: What are the eligibility requirements (traditional route)?
A: You must meet an education requirement and submit proof of education through The IIA's system. Candidates without a degree can enter via the Internal Audit Practitioner (IAP)
Q: What is the IAP?
A: Internal Audit Practitioner - an entry-level credential earned via the CIA Part 1 exam. It suits students, beginners, and those without a degree, and IAP holders can apply to waive CIA Part 1.
Q: How much does the CIA cost? (traditional 3-part route)
A: Total ~$990 (IIA members) / ~$1,515 (non-members) — roughly ₹93,650 / ₹1,43,320. Breakdown (member / non-member): Application: $120 / $240 Part 1: $310 / $445 Part 2: $280 / $415 Part 3: $280 / $415
Q: What does the Challenge Exam cost?
